‘Symbiotic' is a 140-page handmade photographic book that explores the physical and social parallels between humans and nature. The book consists primarily of my own photography, with supporting embellishments such as my own scanned pressed flowers and doodles, as well as relevant quotes/poetry. By drawing connections between humanity and the natural environment through photography, I have aimed to showcase the beauty of the human form and condition, as well as emphasise the ways in which we are intrinsically part of nature.
I created the page spreads in Adobe InDesign, and printed them on 150gsm Envirocare paper. I created the cover using chipboard and olive green book cloth, and also bound the book by hand using the coptic binding technique. I implemented hands-on techniques throughout the creation of this book, as well as my specific selection of recycled paper, to extend the human- and nature-themed subject matter of the content into the book's physical creation. Additionally, my choice to bind the book by hand allowed me to learn a new creative skill while also having the practical advantage of permitting the book to lay flat.
